Dealing with Colic

As some of you know, we added another beautiful baby boy to our family in May. About 2 weeks after he was born the poor little guy started in with screaming and crying and about drove us crazy with worry. After many trips to the doctor and many trial and error runs with formula, etc. we finally came to the conclusion that Noah is suffering from mild reflux and a pretty bad case of colic. Anyone who has been through this knows. You know exactly how frustrating, draining, and just plain mentally exhausting it can be. We are on Week 9 tomorrow and slowly starting to see some signs of improvement. Noah is now taking prevacid and the reflux is pretty well managed, but we are still dealing with bouts of colic at times. Everyone keeps telling me to wait it out and that 3 months is the average time that this will last. They say he will outgrow it. We are skeptical, but still counting the days to week number 12!

THINGS WE HAVE TRIED
  • swaddling
  • gas drops
  • colic calm drops
  • swings, bouncy seats, carriers
  • shushing and swaying
  • tummy sleeping
  • Alimentum
  • Similac RS
  • different bottles

The list could go on and on and I'm sure I've forgotten something, but nothing consoles this child! The best thing we've done so far is use the Similac RS formula and the only way to quiet him down is white noise and heavy rocking (swaying).

Jayden, our 2 1/2 year old, has been a trooper through this whole ordeal. He has learned these same techniques of consoling from watching us and when little Noah cries, Jayden tries his very hardest to comfort him, as well! He shows a lot of concern for his little brother!
